Ripples in the Sand

Great Sand Dunes National Park - Alamosa, Colorado

The majority of the sands originated in the San Juan Mountains more than 65 miles to the west. Wind and water are the primary movers of the grains. Southwesterly winds began the slow process of bouncing the grains towards the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. There they piled up at the base of the mountains or dropped into the creeks to be washed back out towards the valley floor.
