The water level in Oneonta Gorge will vary depending on the time of year you visit. To reach Oneonta Falls through the canyon, you will need to climb over two giant boulders and a tall log jam, then through waist high water.
Directions: Exit 28 at Bridel Veil. Drive 5.3 miles east to the signed turn-off for Oneonta Falls. Or, exit 35 and drive west for 1 mile on the scenic byway. You will pass a covered bridge on your left and the parking area for Oneonta Falls is just past the covered bridge. Note: You are parking in the parking area at your own risk. Falling rocks have damaged vehicles and busted windshields in the past. You will see evidence of this in the parking area. Best time to Photograph: Just after sunrise. Once the sun has risen high enough over the high canyon walls, a beautiful ray of sunshine will pass over the canyons walls and down onto the waterfall. The weather of course, will dictate whether or not you capture the rays of light over the waterfall. The image above was photographed well after sunrise and I never made it back to capture the beautiful light rays over the waterfall. Photo © copyright by Erik and Melissa Barnes.
